Have you heard of Small Business Saturday? I think it’s a really exciting development and it’s happening in the UK for the first time on Saturday 7th December – one of the busiest shopping days in the calendar
It’s something new over here but it’s very established in the US – and receives a phenomenal level of support there – and there’s a big push to make it a key part of the business calendar over here. As a business owner, you ought to be aware of it, whether it’s to use it to come up with your own promotion, or just to support and promote it.
Small Business Saturday has got Government backing and it being heavily promoted by American Express, who say “We believe small businesses are the backbone of the UK and the heart of local communities. That’s why we’re proud to be supporting you with our Shop Small campaign. And with the nationwide launch of Small Business Saturday on 7 December 2013, we’ll make sure it’s a big day for small businesses.” Here, here I say.
The overall message is for customers to buy from local traders and generally speaking there is a High Street focus to the activity -for example, Waverley Council locally has agreed to waive parking fees for the day – and there are hundreds of other offers and initiatives being held. Hopefully it will prove a real boost for local High Street traders but there’s no reason why any business could make something of this, such as creating a special offer for customers and so forth.
So what could you do? Come on – be inventive!
